Better protection starts with proper checks
Existing faults identified
We check retained circuits so an old defect isn't simply moved to a new board.
Clear circuit labels
We identify circuits so isolation is simpler when future work is required.
Capacity considered
We account for planned additions when choosing the board configuration.
Assess the circuits before changing the board
An older fuse box may have limited protection, ageing parts or too little capacity for planned additions. A consumer unit replacement can update circuit protection and make identification clearer, but the board isn't separate from the wiring it serves. We assess the existing circuits, earthing and installation condition first. That can reveal faults or unsuitable wiring that need attention as part of the job. Modern layouts may use RCDs or individual RCBO protection, with surge protection considered where appropriate. The right arrangement depends on the property and its existing electrical system.

Choose enough space for future plans
The number of circuits and your likely future demand influence which consumer unit is suitable. Extra capacity may matter if you're planning electric heating, an EV charger or further renovation. Once the scope is agreed, we isolate the supply, remove the old equipment and fit the new board. Each circuit is connected, identified, tested and labelled so you can see what it controls. Any problem found during testing is discussed plainly, rather than hidden behind a neat new row of switches.
Frequently asked questions
Does an old fuse box always need replacing?
Not solely because of its age. Its condition, protection, capacity and the state of connected circuits all matter. We assess those points and explain whether replacement is appropriate for your installation and plans.
Why must circuits be tested before replacement?
A new consumer unit connects to the existing wiring. Testing helps uncover faults, damage or unsuitable arrangements that could affect the upgrade. Any necessary remedial work can then be understood before final connection.
Will the electricity be off during the upgrade?
Yes, the supply must be isolated while the old unit is removed and the replacement is connected. We can discuss the likely sequence beforehand so you can prepare for the interruption to household equipment.
